Our Mission is Our Community – the military community as well as Tampa Bay and our efforts focus on integrating these communities together so we can create a new future for returning veterans.

Our Mission is also driven by these hard truths surrounding veterans.

The number of veterans committing suicide dwarfs combat fatalities since 9/11.

Between 2005 and 2017, 78,875 veterans took their own lives, according to the most recent data from VA. In comparison, about 7,000 troops have been killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, across two decades.

Veterans per day commit suicide.

VA says veteran suicide rate is 17 per day after change in calculation. The VA’s new report lists the daily average of veteran suicides at 17, down from the 20 per day reported in previous years. The VA had removed servicemembers, as well as former National Guard and Reserve members who were never federally activated, from its count.

Veterans are homeless.

Although flawless counts are impossible to come by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 40,056 veterans are homeless on any given night. Approximately 12,700 veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND) were homeless in 2010. The number of young homeless veterans is increasing, but only constitutes 8.8% of the overall homeless veteran population.

Veterans are unemployed.

In 2019, the unemployment rate of veterans varied across the country, ranging from 0.9 percent in Maryland to 6.1 percent in Montana. Among the 284,000 unemployed veterans in 2019, 56 percent were ages 25 to 54, 39 percent were age 55 and over, and 5 were ages 18 to 24.

We are a central hub for connecting Tampa Veterans.

Combining our team culture with programs that give back to local communities we change stigmas returning veterans may feel while positively impacting individual team members and entire communities. These community growth programs and events draw veterans from all walks of life and strengthens our team while building stronger communities within Tampa.
Post 9 / 11 Veterans provides a platform, a starting point, and a place of belonging where Tampa veterans find education and camaraderie while working alongside fellow veterans in our community building projects.

Our Grass Root Efforts Support Tampa Veterans

After decades of well-intentioned efforts, Congress and the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs have failed to put a dent in the crisis of nearly 20 veterans dying by suicide every day, about one and a half times as high as the civilian suicide rate, according to the most recent federal statistics.
“We will never solve the problem at the 30,000-foot level where we are,” Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., the top Republican on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs said in an interview with Stars and Stripes. “I don’t care how many bills we pass.” Noting that veteran advocacy groups are critical in guiding veterans to mental health care on a local level, Roe said Congress can’t solve the problem on its own, “it’s got to be fixed from the ground up.”

Post 9 / 11 Veterans: Boots on the Ground in Tampa

“When service members leave the military, they leave a team-first culture that has a very clear mission, recognizable symbols of status and achievement, and more than 240 years of history and culture,” said Joe Plenzler, communications director for the nonprofit Wounded Warrior Project.
Plenzler suggested it is critical for veterans returning from service to find a new mission in life. “It’s unrealistic to find these same experiences in the civilian world, but it is possible to find a sense of purpose and community – a sense of tribe.”
Founded by two Post 9/11 Veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan our organization was created by the same demographic we are focused on helping and is built on a team culture – a tribe. Operating as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, our ability to connect with our peers and our local communities on both a social and personal level is what sets us apart.
We invite you to get involved with us and feel the personal connection!
